Paperback Dreams: The Life and Times of the Independent Bookstore
This hour-long documentary traces the story of two landmark independent bookstores and their struggle to survive. The film follows Andy Ross, owner of Cody's Books, and Clark Kepler, owner of Kepler's Books, over the course of two tumultuous years in the book business. Paperback Dreams celebrates what these stores offer our local communities, and mourns the cultural loss that comes when a good bookstore closes its doors. In 2005, Clark Kepler closed his store after fifty years in business, and was talking to bankruptcy lawyers. The loss of the store was mourned from handwritten posters on the shop's shuttered windows to the pages of the New York Times. And then -- in a scene straight out of It's a Wonderful Life -- Kepler's loyal customers bailed them out, and the store reopened after 40 days. Producer/Director Alex Beckstead will introduce the screening and answer questions about its making. Local filmmaker Kitty Morgan will also show a clip of her new production, Books & Books: The Movie, which was shot during the book store's 25 anniversary celebration and features comments by various authors, who discuss independent bookstores and their role in our communities at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 8pm. Raymond Jungles: The Colors of Nature
In exquisite gardens inspired by the lush native plants of his adopted home of Miami, landscape artist/architect Raymond Jungles uses nature as a means of self-expression. He is known for modernist groupings of geometric shapes, which highlight the natural aspects of plantings, water features, and native stone. His use of plants, drawn largely from those indigenous to subtropical regions, emphasizes their dramatic sculptural forms. Jungles's original and inviting green spaces, like those of his mentor, the master landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, bring the comfort and beauty of nature into built settings. In a beautiful new monograph with a forward by Terence Riley, the director of the Miami Art Museum, The Colors of Nature (Monacelli Press, $50) showcases the work of Raymond Jungles. His modern vocabulary is on display in beautiful color photographs that document each landscape in both panoramic views and intimate details. Jungles's own descriptions of each garden address the process of making the landscape as well as the design elements that tie each composition to common experiences of nature.
